Why Buttons are Evil

A few months ago I was enjoying a bowl of tortilla soup from the Mermaid Cafe in Neiman Marcus NorthPark, when I looked across the table to a pair of ladies walking by.  I was surprised when through the gape in one of the woman's button-down blouse I could see not only her bra but her stomach as well.  Oh my!  I felt for this unsuspecting lady because she had no idea that she was flashing people as she walked past them.  And actually being unaware is better than being insecure that you're going to flash people.  Insecurity is a defeating feeling.  Ignorance is bliss.

Buttons are hard to manage for small, medium and large bustlines.  If Jennifer Anniston causes a shirt to pucker and pull open . . . Both pattern makers we've worked with praise our hook & eye closure (our sewer and CFO have a different response though.  Hooks & eyes are cumbersome to sew and expensive to purchase).  Buttons have to be relatively closely spaced over the bustline to prevent the gaping, but putting so much pressure on one point of closure - a button - causes pulls and lines across the center front. 

Also take into account the height of the bustline.  The center bust point varies on bodies, and usually the gape occurs between the center bust point (where the nipple is in a bra) and the high waist.

I cringed when I saw this picture in The Financial Times.  It is slight, but her shirt isn't securely closed.  I wish the photographer would have taken her picture from the opposite side.

Lots of ladies are adept at safety pinning, able to do it in a matter of seconds.  Some women wear camisoles underneath their white button-downs so they feel covered in case of a pop.  I have only owned one button-down shirt in my life, and I put a snap inbetween the buttons where there was a pull.  I don't wear that shirt.

And that is why we think buttons are evil.  For women with large chests, we make button-down shirts that give that sleekly tailored look, but have a secure closure.

Bikini Barista

Lessons from Christmas Shopping Men

Christmas Eve is 3 days away and most men are starting their shopping. I know this because I was among them yesterday doing my Christmas Shopping. I was considering a beautiful item as a gift and chose to wait and contemplate the purchase then come back if I could not find anything more stunning. I find it interesting to consider the difference in style as to how men and women operate.

As I was walking out of this large store a gentleman and his young teen daughter brushed past me. I could not help over hearing his comments to his daughter.

“If you want something for Mom get it now. This is the first store I have been in for Christmas and it is the last. Today is it.”

This comment struck me like a thunderbolt. As women we spend so much time making everything perfect. We deliberate over the best gift to give everyone. We spend hours decorating, planning, cooking, shopping, wrapping and creating the festive atmosphere.

All that in addition to work, kids, pets and running the house - No wonder the holidays are exhausting!

Both genders could take some hints from each other. Perhaps some men could put in additional effort and as women we could reduce our effort - slightly. Was it really necessary for me to think about my purchase and go back to buy it? Because you know I did go back. So that was 2 trips for 1 gift. Not time efficient!

Women truly create the holidays but how much can we do?

I hope the shopping gentleman’s wife enjoys her “get it now”, one day, one store gift. I really have to rethink my shopping style next year.

Merry Christmas

Months ago I read "Professional Pattern Grading for Women's, Men's and Children's Apparel" by Jack Handford.  His dedication reads as follows:

This book is dedicated to all those who share my philosophy that clothing is truly one of our necessities, along with food and shelter; but that food, regardless of the thought and care that goes into its preparation, is ephemeral and only the memory of it remains; that shelter represents an expensive and generally long-term investment that is not easily changed to suit our shifting moods. 

On the other hand, clothing can be as disposable as we wish, quicklky changed according to our needs and within a wide range of prices - and the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from wearing a well-designed, well-constructed and well-fitted garment of appropriate material can out live the most magnivicent meal without representing the expense or permance of housing.

Lovely, lovely, lovely.  I am likeminded with Mr. Handford and his sentiments.  Wearing clothes that we feel wonderful in is a more-than-positive experience.  It elevates our mood and we perform better.  That is our goal in designing clothes for women with large breasts.  We want you to look and feel your best.

I hope this holiday season you have the perfect mix of good food, warm shelter and excellent clothes that fit you well.

How a bra is sized.

Bra sizes are quite confusing. The bra size is determined by two measurements. There is a number and a letter. The number is the size around your ribcage. This is important for choosing a good fitting bra. This number is NOT your measurement around your body. Oh no, that would be too simple. The ribcage measurement has 4 inches added then the size issued.

The cup sizing is given a letter to denote the fullness of the breast. The letter relates to the difference between the breast measurement and the bust measurement. This starts at an A,B,C,D and then repeats as in DD, DDD, E, F, G……This system was first created by Warner bra in 1935. It enabled a standard for manufacturing and is still used today.

The combination of ribcage and breast volume are described as 36DD for example.
The little known reality of this sizing system is that as the band size increases so does the cup sizing. If you compare a 36D bra with 48D bra you might expect the cup sizes to be the same. They are both a D cup but the size 48D will be larger than a 36D.

I wanted to spotlight this new retro design because I think it is just adorable.

Rigby and Peller are a London, England based foundation garment company celebrating 70 years in business. They have commissioned a special, limited edition set to commemorate their longevity.

I would not wear it, I would not pay 300 dollars for it but I LOVE it. I think this was so beautifully done that it deserves admiring.

They have taken a very strange yet popular bra style from the 50’s and revamped it in a seductive soft pink satin. The conical bra originally looked bullet proof in a heavy white nylon yet their version has a romantic and innocent appeal. Attention to historic form is shown in the stitching detail of the cups and placement of the seams.

The panties worn with the bra have a high waist and are covered in ruffles over the butt. This gives a childlike element that works wonderfully. The mood is perfectly cast in the photograph with the dusty light and tactile backdrop. It almost looks fluid.

At first glance I was taken by this photograph. As I have looked at it further I continue to be impressed by the sophistication of the presentation. All design elements come together in color, balance and style. This makes my mind wander through costume history. I picture a slower time with soft gentle light and structurally tailored clothes. This reminds me that I love beautiful lingerie and all it's vintage charm.

Greene was born in Jacksonville, Florida, the daughter of Michele, who works in insurance, and Joe Greene, a U.S. Marine who now owns his own concrete business. She grew up in Middleburg and Jacksonville, and went to University Christian School before transferring to Wolfson High School when she was in tenth grade. She moved to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 17 to pursue an acting career.Greene has one sibling, an older brother named Joe, who still resides in Jacksonville with his parents.
Greene is good friends with her Twilight co-stars, particularly Kellan Lutz, whom she knew before filming the movie.

While shooting the latest installment of the Twilight saga, New Moon, Greene told USMagazine.com that "We were working 12 hours a day, so it didn't leave too much time to eat." To stay in shape Greene reportedly had a personal trainer on set, worked out for several hours each day and started doing Pilates to maintain her physique. Her trainer has also begun to teach the starlet mixed martial arts in preparation for the third movie in the Twilight series, Eclipse, slated for a 2010 release. "I get to fight in "Eclipse." My trainer is teaching me mixed martial arts right now. So. Cool. But I feel if I was in a real fight, I'd get my ass kicked.
